Will AI replace accountants?

By Keno Vigil · Checked Sep 26, 2026
The short answer

Not wholesale, based on the data so far. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects accountant and auditor jobs to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035 and says automating routine tasks isn’t expected to reduce overall demand. But accounting ranks among the more AI-exposed occupations in Anthropic’s usage data (49th of 756), and the pressure is showing up first in entry-level hiring. Recording, classifying and reconciling transactions is the most exposed work; judgment, audit and advisory work is safer.

What happens when AI meets a merger?

Finance is one of the first functions combined after an acquisition: two controllers, two month-end closes, two ledgers. Once the systems are merged, the transaction work shrinks, and AI makes what remains easier to run with fewer people. In the Acquisition Log, buyers from Broadcom (VMware) to Capital One (Discover) cut corporate roles anywhere from days to months after closing.

Every acquisition ends with a spreadsheet: roles, costs, overlaps. AI adds a column. As buyers get more data on what every employee does, and tools that can do part of it, the question stops being “do we need two of these?” and becomes “how many do we need at all?” That’s why the moves below matter more in a deal year than any other.

What should accountants do now?

  1. Move your time toward judgment: review, sign-off, tax planning and advisory work.
  2. Own the automation. Be the person who sets up and checks the AI-assisted close, not the person it replaces.
  3. Keep your credential current. Licensed accountability is hard to hand to software.
  4. If your company is being acquired, get close to the ledger and system migration. The people running it are usually kept longest.
  5. Write down your wins with numbers: days cut from the close, errors caught, money saved.
