Will AI replace data analysts?
The job is highly exposed to AI and still growing. BLS projects data scientist jobs, the closest official category, to grow 35% from 2025 to 2035, and lists companies’ adoption of AI as a source of demand. At the same time, the role ranks near the top of both major exposure studies: 19th of 785 in Microsoft’s and 18th of 756 in Anthropic’s. Expect the work to change more than the job to disappear.

What happens when AI meets a merger?
Two companies mean two data stacks, two dashboards for the same metric and two analytics teams. The integration needs people who can reconcile the numbers, which is valuable work while it lasts, and a single team afterward. In the Acquisition Log, buyers from Broadcom (VMware) to Capital One (Discover) cut corporate roles anywhere from days to months after closing.
Every acquisition ends with a spreadsheet: roles, costs, overlaps. AI adds a column. As buyers get more data on what every employee does, and tools that can do part of it, the question stops being “do we need two of these?” and becomes “how many do we need at all?” That’s why the moves below matter more in a deal year than any other.
What should data analysts do now?
- Own the question, not just the query: start from the business decision the analysis serves.
- Use AI for the routine pulls and first-pass analysis, and be the one who checks and explains the result.
- Present your work. Recommendations delivered to decision-makers are harder to automate than reports.
- In a merger, volunteer to reconcile the two companies’ numbers. Whoever makes the combined metrics trustworthy becomes essential.
- Keep a record of decisions your analysis changed.
