Will AI replace project managers?

By Keno Vigil · Checked Sep 26, 2026
The short answer

The data points to change, not replacement. BLS projects project management specialist jobs to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035. Microsoft’s study puts the role in the middle of the pack for AI applicability (278th of 785 occupations). The most exposed work is plans, status tracking and vendor selection; the least exposed is the human core of the job: negotiating for resources, solving problems with the team and agreeing requirements with stakeholders.

What happens when AI meets a merger?

Integrations run on project managers: an acquisition can create dozens of workstreams overnight, which is why PMs are often busy, and hired, during a deal. The risk comes afterward, when the integration office closes and two PM teams face one portfolio. In the Acquisition Log, buyers from Broadcom (VMware) to Capital One (Discover) cut corporate roles anywhere from days to months after closing.

Every acquisition ends with a spreadsheet: roles, costs, overlaps. AI adds a column. As buyers get more data on what every employee does, and tools that can do part of it, the question stops being “do we need two of these?” and becomes “how many do we need at all?” That’s why the moves below matter more in a deal year than any other.

What should project managers do now?

  1. Let AI handle status reports and plan updates, and spend the time you save with stakeholders.
  2. Be the person who unblocks problems, not the person who reports them.
  3. Attach yourself to outcomes the business pays for, not to the process.
  4. In a deal, ask to run an integration workstream. It’s the most visible work in the company for a year.
  5. Before the integration office closes, line up your next program.
