Will AI replace graphic designers?
This is one of the few roles where the official outlook already reflects AI. BLS projects graphic designer jobs to decline 2% from 2025 to 2035 and says AI design tools will make designers more productive and reduce the need for them. Generating images and producing layouts are the most exposed tasks; working with clients on what a design should do, and developing original concepts, are the least.

What’s actually happening at companies?
- Nov 3, 2025Bloomberry analysis of ~180M global job postings: computer graphic artist postings fell 33% in 2025 (after -12% in 2024), vs -8% for all postings; author attributes it to generative AI substituting for output-producing creative roles.Reported ↗
What happens when AI meets a merger?
After an acquisition, the brand usually consolidates too: one identity, one design system, one in-house creative team. A rebrand creates a burst of design work, then a smaller team to maintain it, and AI tools shrink that team further. In the Acquisition Log, buyers from Broadcom (VMware) to Capital One (Discover) cut corporate roles anywhere from days to months after closing.
Every acquisition ends with a spreadsheet: roles, costs, overlaps. AI adds a column. As buyers get more data on what every employee does, and tools that can do part of it, the question stops being “do we need two of these?” and becomes “how many do we need at all?” That’s why the moves below matter more in a deal year than any other.
What should graphic designers do now?
- Move up from production to direction: concepts, systems and brand decisions.
- Use AI tools fluently for production, and sell the judgment on top.
- Get closer to clients and stakeholders; conferring on what a design must do is the least exposed part of the job.
- In a merger, raise your hand for the rebrand. It’s the most visible design work there is.
- Build a portfolio of outcomes, not just images: conversions, launches, recognition.
