Will AI replace HR professionals?

By Keno Vigil · Checked Sep 26, 2026
The short answer

HR is more exposed than most corporate functions. BLS still projects HR specialist jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, but Anthropic’s usage data ranks the role 35th of 756 for AI exposure, and IBM’s CEO said in 2025 that AI had replaced several hundred HR employees. Reporting and candidate sourcing are among the most exposed tasks; employee relations, exit interviews and onboarding are among the least.

What happens when AI meets a merger?

HR is almost always combined after an acquisition: two HR teams, two HR systems, two benefits programs. The integration itself creates HR work, such as benefits harmonization, retention agreements and re-leveling, that usually ends within a year, and AI self-service tools make the team that remains smaller. In the Acquisition Log, buyers from Broadcom (VMware) to Capital One (Discover) cut corporate roles anywhere from days to months after closing.

Every acquisition ends with a spreadsheet: roles, costs, overlaps. AI adds a column. As buyers get more data on what every employee does, and tools that can do part of it, the question stops being “do we need two of these?” and becomes “how many do we need at all?” That’s why the moves below matter more in a deal year than any other.

What should HR professionals do now?

  1. Move toward the work that needs trust: employee relations, investigations, difficult conversations.
  2. Own the HR AI tools, including the policies on how they’re used and checked.
  3. Become the expert on something the business can’t get wrong: compensation, compliance, labor relations.
  4. In a merger, get onto the integration team. Benefits and leveling decisions are where HR earns its seat.
  5. Keep a list of problems you solved that a chatbot couldn’t have.
